Depression is becoming an epidemic or is it? With therapies such as hypnotherapy, one can lessen the effects of depression in all of us..

We all at one time or another feel depressed. Some of us feel it for a while and then it is gone and others feel it for a lifetime. With doctors prescribing drugs on a casual basis I wanted to know if there was something else that could support me. That was when I discovered hypnotherapy.

Early in the 90's some major trauma was going on in my life. So I went to the doctor who very quickly put me on antidepressants.

The first two days on the drugs I just slept. The drugs totally knocked me out which was not like me at all.  A friend of mine had called and suggested I go see her psychologist. That was my first experience with hypnosis. During the session I had never felt so relaxed, it was wonderful, for the first time in a long time to feel normal again. My entire body felt calm and absolutely relaxed and I was still in control.

The hypnotherapy he performed was a simple relaxation so that I could start to sleep normally without the insomnia and so that I could function during the day. The relaxation exercises were phenomenal. All I really wanted was to feel normal again and this was giving me the way to do that. He gave a me a tape of them so that I could do the exercises at home which I did faithfully and I actually went off the drugs with my physicians permission within a month.

In hypnosis you get an opportunity to relax your body. While in a depressed state your entire body is under tremendous stress. Once the body can relax, the mind can then start to relax. As I was not sleeping that was adding to the anxiety and sleep deprivation which meant the viscious cycle was just getting worse and the insomnia getting more intense. In hypnosis the viscious cycle of pain and hurt is stopped for a brief moment so that you can catch your breath. When this happens then one can work on the solution to the problem, until then it is just another problem that is loaded on another problem with no end in sight.

According to one source as many as 9.5% of Americans are depressed and using anti depressants. Hypnotherapy may be an alternative that may support the depressed state without the use of drugs.
